Alexis told me about a quote she saw on instagram many years ago, I like how it applies to life and especially to art.
“Anything worth doing is worth doing half-assedly.”
So many people I talk with tell me the reason they have never tried to sketch is because they fear it won’t look right. Or people don’t try a new cooking technique because it might not be great. Life is full of challenges and opportunities that our fear of failure prevents us from trying.
Before the pandemic, and before our move to France, I did seminars titled: “Yes! You can travelsketch!” They were for people who said they were just not artistic, thankfully a few tried, some first efforts were not great, but they continued and are enjoying sketching now, that is why I am constantly urging people to capture the moment, even half-assedly.
In 1952 Salvador Dali encouraged artists to seek excellence not perfection, he said, “Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” Good advice.
I think we all have our comfort zones – I will try a new ingredient or a new author but other things like sketching (or indeed any sport) I hesitate over instead of giving it a go.
