Thoughts from theTravelsketcher – Workshops

This mornings sketch.

Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) was a piano virtuoso and composer, and a great humanitarian – in those days he was kind of a rockstar in the classical world. In 1919 he became the first Prime Minister of Independent Poland after WW1. He is famously quoted as saying:

“If I miss one day of practice, I notice it. If I miss two days, the critics notice it. If I miss three days, the audience notices it.”

Like music, sketching or painting are skills that require practice, frequent practice. For that reason it is important to sketch something, anything, everyday. I pretty much make it a part of my morning routine to sketch something, usually from my imagination, and often quite small.

Yes! You can travelsketch!

Prior to the pandemic I did many workshops with this title. They were my response to the many people who told me that they didn’t sketch because, “I am just not artistic.” Since the goal of travelsketching is not to creat masterpieces, but is to capture the moments of your journey, I knew that I could help them.

For some time now I have been considering offering the workshop again. Last week, when we were at Alliance Françe it seemed like the perfect place to do a workshop. The conversation I had there was encouraging so I moved the idea to more of a front burner. Keep posted. Here are some photos, and links to posts from past workshops.

Most of the folks at these workshops were just beginners, we had a lot of fun and they gained a bit of confidence. I would love to hear your thoughts about workshops, and especially if you are close enough to Portland, Oregon to take one in.
