I am writing this on the Eurostar on the way to Paris, then on to home in Normandie. Last Friday we rented a car for the drive from Portland to Seattle. We visited some family along the way then met up with friends at the rental return in downtown Seattle. After the best Mexican food of the trip at Rosaritas at Greenlake we headed for the Woodland Park Zoo to take in the light show.
Van Gogh talked about how difficulties with the mechanics of the art can make capturing what the artist sees a challenge. The zoo lights were dazzling, but I can’t imagine how one would capture their brilliance in paint. I did sketch and paint a thank you card for our friends, I captured the moment, but the whole visual of being there was overwhelming.

On New Years Day I added a panel to the mini-sketchbook.

We have been on such a journey these last two years that the words from John Denver’s song “Sweet Surrender” seem quite fitting.

We cashed in miles so we could fly first class on British Air from Seattle to London, it was well worth it, such a delightful trip. It started with a the First Class Lounge at Sea-Tac.

The flight attendants made the trip a joy, so, as I have done for many years, I did mini-sketches for them.

We spent one night in London so as to be ready for our early morning Eurostar departure. We were in a London pub filled with fans watching the World Championship of Darts Match. I loved it, I think Tricia chuckled a bit at how people could be so excited about a “ton-eighty” and darts.

We are just coming out of the tunnel that goes underneath the English Channel, hard to fathom (oh, bad pun). In just over an hour we will be at Gare du Nord in Paris, then take a taxi to Gare Montparnasse for our train to Flers. It has been a wonderful trip but I am ready for a bit of time at home. Yet, there is more travel in our future – I may get tired while traveling, but never tire of traveling – thankfully Tricia loves it just as much as I do.
I hope your year has some journeys for you, around the block or around the world. Wherever you go, capture those moments and memories.
It was a wonderful trip made even more special with time with our loved ones.

It seems that you had a terrific trip. We recently felt the same way and I was reminded of this old song from Frank Sinatra. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a95MByOs8XQ

What a great visit—and thanks for literally taking us all along on the journey home with your words and sketches. You’ve made forever friends by sketching pieces for the flight attendants, made the most of your brief time in London, and then took all of us on the Eurostar with you as you left the Chunnel and headed toward home. I’m sure you know which sketch was my personal favorite. The quote from that John Denver song touched me deeply–but it also expressed the reality of your lives right now. Perfect. Thanks, John Denver! and Thanks, Terry!
