On the MS Seagull in the Adriatic Sea

We are on our second day abord the MS Seagull, sailing through the Croatian islands.

First, a couple of sketches from Split. I went out for coffee and discovered a quiet plaza apart from the tourist crowds.

The fish marked in split is a crazy place, chaos and more types of fish than you can imagine. I was jostled about as I was standing to do this sketch, if I was in the way of someone working in a stall they just nudged me out of their way.

Saturday morning we boarded the MS Seagull, our home for the final week of this long journey. If you look close at the photo you can see Tricia on a bench.

I sketched as we sailed along to our first stop, Makarska.

A view from the stern of the ship.

The food on the ship is quite good, but the cruise is arranged so that we arrive in port in time to find evening meals on our own, I had an anchovy pizza – I don’t tire of pizza.

My view this morning is hard to beat.

We made a stop at Mljet to hike through a National Park to a lake where we took a ferry to the tiny St Mary’s island and monastery. We never expected to get to do something like this but are so glad that it was part of the trip. I sketched this with brown ink as we were approaching the island.

Pillars at the monastery.

Of course I continue to catch people in candid situations, these are from Split.

We are approaching Slano now at 17.30 where we will spend the evening. Tomorrow morning we depart for Dubrovnik.

Thanks as always for joining us in our travels it means a lot. And as always, keep on sketching.

What an incredible experience! You and Tricia on ‘your yacht’ (well, with other people) sailing through the Croatian islands. I particularly liked your sketch of the view from the front of the boat. Beautiful. And that pizza made my mouth water. O course, your candid photos or sketches of people are always interesting–(does everyone smoke…?!!) Enjoy the week as you sail to new places!

    1. Well as you know, lots of people do smoke in Europe, but for some reason I find them on a break rather interesting.

Yes–people totally relaxed or interesting. Whether they’re smoking, relaxing over a cup of coffee or glass of wine, or sipping a chai tea latte like me.

Love, love, love your “Pillars at the Monastery” sketch. Such a strong and successful composition. You need to publish your travel sketch books. Seriously.
