TheTravelsketcher’s Tuesday Tip

Learn from other sketchers and artists, but resist comparing or evaluating your sketches with what others do.

Art is subjective, not perfection. Develop your own style rather than trying to emulate someone else. If you think your art is not good enough just remind yourself that you share the company of these failed artists:

  • Monet
  • Degas
  • Pissarro
  • Renoir
  • Berthe Morisot

They all were rejected by the prestigious Paris Salon because their work was considered not good enough or even repulsive.

As travelsketchers, capturing the moment is our raison d’être, and even the simplest of sketches can accomplish that end.

These sketches from July 2022 are not great works of art, but they do capture the moment when we were in Switzerland, and looking at them now takes me back to the breakfast we had while watching goats grazing on the distant hill.

Kudos to those who figured out that last week’s tip was about starting with the big shapes then adding the details. I did appreciate the readers who applied it to wisdom for living, good thinking.

Keep on traveling and sketching.
