TheTravelsketcher’s Tuesday Tip

Self-taught does not mean unlearned.

People learn in different ways. For me, classrooms are a struggle. I would like to think I am just smart and brilliant, most likely it is that I am impatient.

Then there is my ego and insecurity, which kept me from art workshops because I did not feel I was “good enough” – forget the fact that the reason you go to a workshop is because you want to get better. Such is the thinking that keeps the psychology world ticking.

Thankfully we have YouTube, I have learned so much from watching videos; as I am moving into oil painting I find it is a treasure trove of info.

A painting from many years ago on my first pochade box I made from a cigar box.

Another source are the other artists who work at serious art supply stores. This week a wonderful woman at Columbia Art & Drafting took time to explain the difference between Liquin and Walnut Alkyd. I would have picked the wrong one.

There are also places like Instagram and instructional posts.

Never stop learning and you will never need to apologize for being self-taught.
