“Sometimes it’s the unexpected detours that lead to the best adventures.” Shirley Riley

True words for life and for our art. I met Shirley when she came to one of my “Yes! You can travelsketch!” workshops in Mukilteo, not far from where this painting was done. She wanted to learn to sketch a croissant, which she does quite well these days. The unexpected detour was that Shirley and Jim have become two of our best friends.
In sketching and painting we often end up with an unintended mark, or even a change in scene. These often can be the seed of something better than we envisioned at the start. Bob Ross called them “Happy little accidents.”
Wow. You sure know how to make a person feel special. The truth is, the feeling is mutual. We think of both of you as forever friends, like family. And as far as sketching croissants—I always had an ulterior motive. You have to buy a croissant in order to sketch a croissant. And then you get to eat it! Clever me.
