This week in The Pearl and beyond – April 25, 2025

Picasso painted his anti-war Guernica in 1937 in response to the bombing of the town of Guernica. It was a form of resistance that artists have often used.

Another form of resistance in art and in life is “Illegitimi non carborundum” – don’t let the bastards get you down. Hope, joy, and beauty are a form of resistance. When we spend time with friends, when we laugh, enjoy good food and music, and when we paint and sketch the wonder of the world, we are resisting by not letting the negative beat us. This was such a week for us.

We have a pretty good sized garden bed right here in the heart of The Pearl.

This week I discovered Procreate Pocket, an app for the iPhone. You use your finger instead of an Apple Pencil but all of the features are the same; this should be fun.

We spent three nights at Canon Beach this week, I am enjoying getting back in touch with the magnificent Oregon coast. It was perfect weather, well a bit cool at times and a lot of wind, but perfect. I spent two afternoons doing plein air oil painting on the beach.

Haystack Rock

Just a few miles south, in the town of Rockaway, is the Old Growth Cedar Trail, what an amazing place. It was good to get out of the wind and walk through this stunning place, filled with old growth trees and skunk cabbage. Check out Tricia’s blog this week for more info and some great photos.

Of course food and eating are both keys for us to maintain hope and joy in the midst of trials and life. I discovered Patagonia Brand tinned fish. These anchovies in olive oil with lemon and olives could not help but bring a smile. BTW, if the only thing you are familiar with regarding anchovies is the salty, flat anchovies used on pizza and in Cesar dressing, your experience is limited, there are so many other options.

Then of course a bit of fantasy is always good while watching the news, the urge to fly away is c’est normal.

So this week, whatever challenges you face – “Illegitimi non carborundum.” Greet people on the streets with a smile, email a friend, have some good food, and of course draw some of the beauty around you, no matter how imperfect your sketch it will make you feel better.

  1. I know I should be commenting on the wonderful paintings, but the anchovies look amazing. I also love tins of fish 🙂

    1. In the US so many people are dismissive of tinned fish, not realizing that there are high quality tinned fish, and that in other parts of the world they are considered a delicacy.

Glad you liked the paintings, thanks.

What a day at Cannon Beach! How likely is that?! And your own very manageable garden. Lots to enjoy this spring. Janice
