This week in The Pearl – August 15, 2025

Last weekend, Tricia’s sister and family came down from Seattle to go to a soccer game, which meant we got to spend some time together. Saturday we hung out and played Calico, check it out if you need a good addition to your boardgame shelf. I thought it was a perfect time since our niece and I teamed up for a win.

Sunday morning our daughter and son-in-law joined us for brunch at Sweet Bacon Cafe. It was our first time there, and even this less-than-passionate-about-brunch guy loved it. I had the Sausage Benedict, didn’t have to eat much for the rest of the day.

Monday I did some oil painting. Gamblin, a Portland company, has a set of three oil paints called the Reclaimed Earth Colors. Their website describes them: “Every speck of pigment in these tubes has been painstakingly reclaimed from waters tainted by iron released from mines. Iron oxides make lightfast, natural, and safe oil paints. We want to put them where they belong: on your palette.” I love the concept and love the colors.

This 8x8in oil on wood panel was inspired by a painting I saw at brunch, inspiration comes unexpected most often. The only colors I used were the three from Gamblin along with Windsor & Newton Titanium White.

Wednesday we roasted some of the Patio Eggplants from our garden along with cherry tomatoes that grew next to them, then served it over creamy polenta. Hard to make a better and easier lunch.

Saturday is another gathering of the Portland Urban Sketchers, we will be meeting at a nearby food truck pod. I wanted to experiment with using acrylics on paper so did this.

Any week with food and art is a pretty good week. I hope yours went well. As always thank you for following, and keep on capturing the moments.

  1. That sausage dish looks amazing! I can see why you wouldn’t need much else all day. I love the simple sketch using your new paints. Have fun with the other sketchers.

    1. I actually painted with acrylics for 20+ years before switching to oils, but never really did them in a sketchbook, so it was an experiment. That is the fun of art.

Nice that the in-laws visited! That sausage Benedict looks incredible, albeit very heavy! In contrast, the homemade polenta dish looks lighter. Thanks for sharing your week!

    1. It was more than I usually eat, but every now and then it is a joy.
