Greetings From Tromsø

We are in Norway – hard to believe. The next couple of weeks should be a plethora of new sights, quite different from the part of Europe we are so familiar with.

My week started with a gift in the mail. A fellow sketcher took me up on my offer of sending them a postcard painting, which of course I did. She sent me a postcard in return. I do believe this is the first time anyone has done that, I am so grateful. Thank you so much for this beautiful card.

The offer still stands, if you would like a postcard from someplace on my journeys just ask. No reciprocal postcard is expected, but they are highly appreciated.

Our car needed servicing so we took it to the Renault dealer in Domfront. They gave us a loaner, it ran well but it had seen better days. We went to Central Cafe for a coffee and of course a sketch of one of the main intersections in Domfront.

Wednesday morning we took the train from Domfront to Paris. We spent the night at the airport so as to be ready for a morning flight to Norway. I sketched one of the airport towers from our hotel room.

We flew from Paris to Helsinki, Finland. After looking at images of Helsinki I did this on the plane.

We will spend a few days here before boarding our ship for a cruise around Norway, ending up in Iceland. It is a beautiful place so far. As we were on the plane I realized that we would not see the sun set for about two weeks, we are in the far north.

Summer is in full swing, I hope you are off on some grande voyage, nearby or far away. Would love to hear where you are headed, and love to see some sketches.

  3. I have enjoyed many trips to Norway and Iceland, in both summer and winter. Working in the north I am used to the extremes of daylight, but one thing to watch for is the sun along the horizon if you’re a bit farther south. It’s quite impressive. Reykjavik should be in semi-twilight around 2 a.m. I have great photos from that period. The colours are amazing.

    1. I have been to northern Alaska many times, it is impressive. Norway seems a bit more polished than Alaska.

  4. Sounds like you guys have a good time to look forward to … maybe just what you need right now. Enjoy the sun and sun and sun 🌞. I like your sketch of Helsinki – who said flying is boring. You won’t receive sketches from me, but I will try to take some nice pictures of a new town we are visiting next weekend.

Very special to see lovely sketches of each step on your journey toward your cruise. Beautiful. And how kind of a fellow artist to share a (very nice) postcard of their work with you! You keep saying that all we need to do is ‘ask’ to get an artsy postcard from you. Well, Travelsketcher, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE a sketched postcard from Iceland (a place you know has meaning for us!)

Great sketches each step of the way toward your cruise–thanks for sharing these. And how kind of your fellow artist to reciprocate with a (very nice) sketch from her neck of the woods. You always say all we have to do is ask for a postcard sketch–so, Travelsketcher, we would LOVE to have a postcard sketch from Iceland (a place you know has meaning for us). Enjoy all the upcoming sights and experiences!

Apologies to all for the repeat message. Thought I’d lost the first–it disappeared , so rewrote & resent it. Sorry

I have just one word for you and your trip to Norway: jealous, jealous, jealous. Oh wait, I have two more words: very grateful. (That Tim and I will be there in September/October and be with you and Tricia in Oslo.) Oh… and five more words: postcard sketch of Norway please! 🙂

  9. That sounds like a fabulous cruise, so different to where we are in a small town in Queensland, Australia.
