Do you have a bucket list? I love to travel but I don’t have a bucket list, nor a list of places that I have a strong desire to visit, I just enjoy going most anyplace. Thankfully Tricia does have a lot of places she would like to go, so for me that is perfect – this has worked well and we have visited some wonderful spots, a few that I had never thought of, or did not have strong feelings one way or another. Croatia is such a place. When Tricia brought it up I thought sure, I had heard good things from friends, so I thought let’s do it. When we discovered a small boat cruise that would visit the islands I got excited about the whole idea. It has been one of the best places we have visited in our life of travel.
We are in Split, Croatia at the moment, but here are few images of our last days in Dubrovnik. It is a beautiful town, most go for the history, or for the Game of Thrones filming location, but the spring flowers were an abundance, even framed by stone walls, I think many miss them in their rush to get to the “Walk of Shame steps.”

We visited one of the less popular churches and, as is usually the case, we discovered a stunning place.

I did a painting of the Pile Gate, one of the main entrances to the old city.

On our last evening in Dubrovnik we sat by the water in the old harbor, a good place to sketch.

We of course ate, here are a few of the dishes I had.

And of course I continue to look for interesting people to take candid shots of – doorways and people smoking on breaks are a particular attraction.

We did a wine tasting at d’Vino, a rustic place we wished we had discovered earlier. We stayed for another glass and I found a guitar in a back section of the shop. The delightful owner encouraged me to play a bit, which I did. It sealed the deal when she told me that Bono had played the same guitar when he was there. Thanks Tricia for the photo, it was fun.

We took the cable car to the mountain behind Dubrovnik where I did a sketch of the walled city from above.

Then one last sketch as a thank you for our Airbnb host.

Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful places we have been, it may not have been on my Bucket list but am I ever glad we went.
Hope your travels are treating you well and you are discovering new places, and of course I always have to encourage you to give sketching a try, it adds so much to the journey.
Dubrovnik is certainly an amazing city. Like you, I’m so glad we went.

I see a couple dishes there that I know were not Tricia’s. LOL How was the “hot dog”? It’s clear that Dubrovnik has captured your heart and that makes it a go to destination for me.

It was a real good hot dog, surprising that some countries brace them quite as we do.

We never really made a bucket list, but if we had depended on a premade list we might missed a lot of the really fantastic or out of the way places that we’ve stumbled on in our travels. I never had an interest in visiting Dubrovnik or Croatia –until now. Your photos and sketches–as always–took us there! LOVE, love, love that you picked up a guitar in that cafe. Jim wants to know if you put out a tip jar. Terry and Bono…Wow.

Well with your new knee you could climb the hills in Dubrovnik just fine, Split is pretty flat.
She did open the door to the street, but only played a couple of pieces so the crowd was pretty small, so no tip jar.
Soon Tricia will post about Croatia and her photos are astounding.

Great post. Croatia was a total revelation to us – it is such a stunning place to visit – we loved Dubrovnik and Split, but the islands off the coast really wowed us. . Hopefully we will return one day but it is a long way from New Zealand!

We are looking forward to a boat trip to the islands, leave on Saturday. I love NZ but as you say it is a long way from a lot of places. Hope you do get to return one day.

I agree. So many say they want to “see the…” but I wonder what that means. So if I stand in front of the Eiffel Tower for one minute then check it of my list and move on did I see it? I think I like your attitude better.

You, Travel Sketcher, are the most well traveled person I know. So, for you to say Dubrovnik is one of the best places you have visited says a lot. (Not to even mention the Bono guitar.) You may not have a bucket list, but I do. Dubrovnik just got tossed in.
