Always clip your pallet to something and put the water-brush cap on the back of the brush.

Often the simplest tips are the best. Some years ago we were at Crater Lake National Park, I was sitting on a log with this fantastic view in front of me, doing this sketch. My pallet was balanced on my knee, but I moved a bit and it fell paint side down into the sand. And I have lost the caps to my water-brushes when they fell off a bench or table then rolled down a hill.
