It is nice that the highs are in the 70s lately, today is actually predicted at 66F, quite a welcomed relief from the 99F of a month ago. We are getting out more and I am still sketching most afternoons.
There was a time when I rarely sketched people, yet of late they seem to be the most interesting subjects. Here is a portrait I did of a man reading his newspaper.

Pencil sketching, even on my iPad with Procreate, is great for capturing people when you know they won’t be staying long.

A sketch from yesterday at Place d’Horlogue.

Yesterday at La Cave Des Pas Sages I talked with a retired art professor from Paris who now lives in Avignon. He was painting in watercolor which is what motivated me to start up a conversation, he spoke little English, but we were able to have a nice conversation, I even understood a bit of it. I do hope we have the chance to talk again. Here are a couple of his paintings – quite impressive.

Yesterday morning we went to the museum at the Petit Palace, next to the Palace of the Popes. The collection is of Christian art, much from Italy. There was an interesting display that showed how the artists made their paints and prepared the canvases and boards that they painted on. It made me appreciate how convenient it is these days with tubed paints and prepared canvases at the art supply store.
People still of course are interesting, I am not sure why people in doorways are intriguing, but here are three more.

Tricia is posting a blog today about Avignon I think, so you should watch for it as she always has great photos and interesting history details, I learn a lot.
Enjoy the cooler weather and the fall colors, and be sure to keep capturing your moments with pencil, ink, and paint.
If I were that guy reading his newspaper, I’d love to have your sketch – it’s beautifully done! I love watching people — airports and coffee shops are always a good place for this.

Good thought but first off I did it digitally so the whole printing it thing would be a challenge, and one of the servers who saw the painting said she liked the painting but did not like him very much… hmmm.

Yes, you are, indeed, sketching more people, and you are doing them well. They are interesting to see. And your continued fascination with the French smoking in doorways… we don’t see that in the US. Thank you for this post. Your words and sketches always transport me.
