“Try not! Do!” Yoda

4×5” oil.

Yesterday, I thought oil painting would be a good idea, but setting up and cleaning seemed like a lot of work. Thankfully Tricia gave me a bit of encouragement and I got my stuff out and started. Once into the motions I enjoyed doing a small painting from our trip to the beach.

Before we moved to France I conducted workshops called “Yes! You can travel sketch!” for folks who wanted to sketch but felt they were not artistic. Everyone was able to capture the moment in one form or another, I hope some are still sketching away. We had a lot of fun and I made some good friends, I miss those days.

Here is link to some of those workshops.

When it comes to art the doing is the most important thing, so if you have been putting off sketching or painting, take Yoda’s advice and just sketch something, like me yesterday, you will be glad you did.

  1. If nothing else, pausing in front of an interesting subject makes you consider it more deeply and appreciate it. An act of mindfulness or meditation – maybe even good for your bloodpressure. It doesnt matter what you get down on paper – it has made you look properly.instead of a passing glance.

    1. Absolutely, one of the benefits of being an artist is that we see things much more mindfully.
