This week in The Pearl – and central Oregon

Started the week by doing a digital painting that has been on my mind. Long time followers of this blog will recall the many candid photographs I took while living in France, I don’t find as many here, but I took this one from our fourth floor window – I had to use Tricia’s camera because I needed a telephoto.

That reminded me of a photo I took while we were living in Avignon of a lady taking a break outside of Les Halles, the market. It always seemed like it would make a good painting.

Sketching and writing down my thoughts are a constant, here is a page from this week.

We did a lot with food this week, just our normal cooking, but on Tuesday it was Tricia’s turn to host her book club so we ended up with a lot.

The salmon turned out great, except, we both have reconfirmed that we prefer salmon just grilled, sauces etc. are just not needed, salmon is best as God made it, fresh and simple – oh, and something I learned from the Alaskan fisheries: “Friends don’t let friends eat farmed salmon.”

Tricia makes the best risotto I have ever had, and I have had great risotto at Michelin restaurants. So it is one of my favorites.

Wednesday we headed to Sisters, Oregon for a few days in central Oregon. It was lunch time so we tried a new place, which I love, the Ski Inn Taphouse. The Jala Burger just called out my name – Jala is short for jalapeño, and, oh my, did it ever live up to its reputation. The bacon wrapped popper on the top was about as hot as most anything I have had, and I have had a lot.

After lunch we headed to Smith Rock State Park. Tricia is doing a series on the Seven Wonders of Oregon, check her post today.

I set up my pochade box and enjoyed a couple of hours in the sun. Just being outside is what makes plein air painting so good. A few people stopped by for a chat, perfect day.

Thanks Tricia for the shot

Back in our room I did another painting using Procreate in an ink and wash style.

Central Oregon has always been a favorite place in my life. I spent many days hiking in the Mt Jefferson Wilderness when I was younger, so it is good to be here.

Hope your week has gone well, thank you so much for taking the time to visit. Praying for grace and peace in your life, and hoping you capture the moments in a sketchpad.

  2. Some amazing looking food – I know you enjoy cooking and eating well and I for one appreciate what you make/show 🙂

I love the way you share your notebooks and ideas. The sketch of the waiting woman captures her mood I think.

    1. Barbara, you are too kind. You are a reminder of the many memories I have of NZ, especially your city. May have to blog about that.

I am completely incapable of capturing anything in a sketch pad. My mind simply doesn’t work that way. But I’m quite envious of those who can. I particularly like your last sketch, Terry xx

    1. Thank yo. Did you see my post a few weeks ago about just capturing a color? It does come easier for some, that is true, but my workshops were tailored for folks who said they were not artistic, and some did passable capturing, so I am always optimistic. Glad you follow this,

Loved reading and viewing your sketches from your journal for one day. That eggplant pesto dish looks delicious, you should post the recipe.

Your 5×7 in oil is really special. Lovely color and texture. (And I sure do wish Tim and I ate as well as you and Tricia! 🙂 )
