This week in The Pearl – November 21, 2025

A sure sign of the seasons is that the crows are returning, I have seen them flying by the window just after sunset. During spring and summer we only see the occasional crow in our part of The Pearl. Then in the winter, the tree right outside our window becomes a communal roost for the crows, hundreds gather in it and other nearby trees.

I read this book a few years ago, it was thoroughly enjoyable, if you need a good read I highly recommend it.

Often crows end up in my art, especially with autumn in the air.

The Guerrilla Pochade box is still up near the window, so I did a bit of oil painting this week. A pallet knife works so well for potted plants.

Oil, 5x7in. On panel. For sale.

Thanks to Tricia’s requests I continue to enjoy painting landmarks around Oregon. She will be writing about the Wallowa Wilderness and mountains in the near future, so I did a painting of the mountains for her.

One of my favorite lines of Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, played so exquisitely by Dame Maggie Smith is: “What is a weekend?” After many years of looking forward to les week-ends ourselves, now, in retirement, we share her sentiment, if not her position and affluence. Now we cook and eat without regard to what day of the week it is, with the exception of our traditional Sunday lunches.

Yesterday we had sautéed rockfish with persillade sauce, mashed cauliflower, and French fingerling salad.

For the rest of the week it was risotto on Saturday, salmon on Sunday, pizza (of course) on Monday, salmon chowder on Tuesday, and left-overs on Wednesday. They say one of the ways you can identify a foodie is by how often they talk about food, well, we usually discuss what we will eat in the future while we are eating a meal, food for us is never a chore. And, thankfully, neither is what the Brits call, “washing up,“ it rarely take us more than 10 minutes to clean the kitchen since we both clean as we go, it is part of the pleasure.

Tuesday, disregarding all of the negative messages from the non-medical head of the HHS, we both got COVID and flu jabs – we are firm believers in vaccinations, we have flown, cruised, traveled all over and still neither one of us has had the virus, hopefully that will continue.

We are getting ready for Thanksgiving next week. Alexis & Joe are bringing a couple of friends to The Pearl, we will have a turkey leg roulade, along with most of the traditional, sort of, other dishes. Hope it turns out.

So I am wishing you a happy Thanksgiving, a good time to pause in whatever circumstances we find ourselves and remember all of the good that we have. I am thankful for my family, friends, food, and of course my pens, inks, and paints.

Printable downloads of this Oregon Bighorn are available at my Etsy shop for $5.

Happy (early) Thanksgiving! Looks like a pleasant week spent close to home. The homemade rockfish meal looks delicious, and it’s good you got your COVID and flu shots before the holidays begin! Have a wonderful weekend ahead!

  2. The mountain/lake paining is stunning. The fish dish looks good – we are having salmon tonight with some asparagus on the side, followed by strawberries. You are so right about thinking about food….and planning according to moods/weather etc too. I know I will be in a bad mood on Tuesday (Teams meetings from 08:30 to 16:30) so it will probably be pizza 🙂

    1. I don’t miss those meetings, but pizza is always a good antidote, with a glass of wine for sure.

Another lovely post Terry, I do enjoy reading about your week of food and sketching being a foodie myself but not much of a sketcher.
