We spent last weekend in Washington. Friday was our 38th anniversary so, as I reported in last week’s post, we went to La Conner for a few days, then the rest of the trip was with friends and family in Seattle. Be sure to check out Tricia’s post this week for some great photos and more detail.
For many years the Oyster Bar on Chuckanut Drive, just north of Bow-Edison, has been our favorite place for birthdays, anniversaries, or any other even flimsy excuse for an enjoyable time. After many years of eating in some memorable places in Europe we still find ourselves hard pressed to find anyplace better.
The restaurant sits on the edge of the steep slope above the Taylor Shellfish Farms and Samish Bay. On a clear day you can see San Juan Island in the distance. We always get the same table by the window which makes it easy to see the eagles that are almost always nearby.

We started off, as usual with raw oysters and bubbles. They have quite a selection which makes deciding a challenge. Maybe it is just bias, but we both think the Puget Sound oysters are the best.

Then for our entrée we had the special of the day – smoked ling cod with roasted beet, goat cheese, and pumpkin seeds. It was so good that Tricia plans to create her own version this week using smoked trout.

We both had the same main, the other daily special.

For dessert it was a trio of sorbets.

Saturday we revisited another long standing tradition: “A Christmas Carol” at ACT theater in Seattle, we have done this with our friends for many years. It inspired a piece of art.

That evening, we went to our old favorite in Mukilteo, Cabernets and IPAs, always fun, but we missed going with Shirley and Jim, they now live in France. The guitarist was as good as the BLT; a perfect ending to the day.


Back home to The Pearl on Tuesday. We started planning for a trip to Europe and France in the spring. So of course a sketch was in order.

Seattle is such a beautiful city, and I’m glad the two of you enjoyed your 38th anniversary there. Seafood galore as well! Enjoy the rest of your trip!

What a wonderful way to celebrate! Oysters and wonderful food. Love the final sketch. We are planning our Europe trip too but believe our paths won’t cross.

How nice that you guys are planning a trip to Europe and France for next spring. We are turning in our paperwork in 10 days to get our long stay visa. Hopefully we will be in France (La Thèbaudiére) next spring too!

We will be in the Ecole. We visited in September. We didn’t meet the names you mentioned before but we met Ingrid and a man named David. We toured the Ecole and the common grounds. Ingrid was living in the Ecole but was going to move into a different unit. Its definitely going to be different than our life now but we want that. One thing I did want to ask, did you guys walk the area very much? Is walking on the roads difficult? And is the Velo route in walking distance?

Hmm. Well it is the smallest of the units I know that, we had a friend that lived there and moved out because it was so hard to keep warm. We never met Ingrid, I think she is French. I would ask her why she moved out. If you want to chat more email would be better. We stay in close contact with some other friends there, so get all the gossip. In general we liked it there, and I hear some changes for the positive are in the works so that is a good thing.
