The last 10 days have gone by fast, and we have not even come close to being tired of Arles and the Camargue. Van Gough painted at a frantic pace while he lived here – about 300 paintings and drawing during his stay from February 1888 and May 1889 – me, I just sketched a lot.
Our AirBnb has a small outdoor area, a nice place to sit and sketch in the afternoon.
Morning un café and sketching is of course d’habitude.
On two mornings, I had a quick un café then headed for the Rhône River to sketch. I did both of these from the same place on the river walk. I sketched the stairs to the bridge, Van Gough painted those same stairs from under the tree that I sketched from across the river.
We visited the Camargue twice, Tricia took beautiful videos of the flamingos, which I am sure will appear on one of her posts in the future. The Camargue inspired me to paint – a watercolor and one with gouache.
Of course how could un artiste dans le pays de Van Gogh not paint sunflowers. This is a watercolor that I did while trying to emulate an acrylic or gouache style. I quite like the intensity that breaking the watercolor “rule” of light to dark produced.
Tomorrow we are off for a few days in Saint Remy, another of the towns in Provence where Van Gough spent time. I would imagine the inspiration of the place will touch me as it did him.
As we enter fall, I hope you are getting some use of your yellow ocher, burnt sienna, and reds for trees in all of their color. As always the goal is to capture the moment, but even more to enjoy the moment.

Well, we certainly enjoyed all the moments scrolling through your post! The ‘Terry-sketched-and-Vincent-Inspired’ farmhouse-tournesol is our favorite sketch. We think both the Travelsketcher and Van Gogh rock! As for burnt sienna and autumnal colors–that’s exactly my personal palette (but not JJ’s…)
