We are off tomorrow

We have been home for just a month, tomorrow we head out for a seven week excursion. My art-toolkit.com pallets are freshly topped off – the standard size one with watercolor, the mini with gouache.

Just three months ago we were in the PNW, now we are Italy and Croatia with stops along the way.

While we are home we don’t wander to far, so my sketches and paintings tend to be of trying new things, or doing a sketch in the evening while watching some travel or food show.

I pondered taking gouache on this trip. I even loaded up a new travel pallet that keeps paints from drying out with gouache and acrylic paint. Then I did a painting to test it all. It would work fine I am sure, but it just takes up too much space for my minimalist approach.

Here are few others from the last week:

Maybe the last sketch I did reveals that we are ready to go, can you pick out Tricia? She has the red bag.

As I often post, we are grateful to be living in France where travel is easy and so much less costly. We will ride trains instead of flying for most all of this trip. Next week look for sketches from Paris and Lyon.

Wherever you are journeying this week, make it a good week and if it has been awhile since you sketched, dig that paint out and give it a go.

It’s a privilege to see this kind of art! And maybe I’m repeating myself, but I always admire people who can put a brush with paint on paper, and inspire me!

Love the effect of gouache on a piece of art. I have an oil painting that seems to come to life when the light hits the gouache spots just so. (And I learned about that from you). Your close to home sketches in this post are lovely. I can only imagine what’s to come in the next seven weeks as you travel to new places. Looking forward seeing what your artistic muse creates…!

    1. Gouache is a bit different than watercolor even though both are water based. Gouache acts more like acrylics and oils in that it is opaque. Yet it usually has a more chalky look than oil and acrylic. I like it because you can paint more like you do with the acrylics that I use.

Thanks as always for the positive thoughts, I am looking forward to some good sketches as well.

The photo of your travel kit and satchel is itself a work of art. Yes, I could see Tricia with her red bag and hands in her pockets, which is so her when she is cold, and I loved your sketch with the blue mountains and red umbrellas. It is so fun and free. Very pretty. Thank you so much for adding art to my day.
