We left Slano on Monday, our next stop was Dubrovnik. As we were preparing to leave I sat on the bow of the ship and sketched.
The plan was to spend one afternoon and evening in Dubrovnik, leaving at noon on Tuesday. The weather had a different plan for us – rain accompanied by strong winds rolled in. We were moored in the shelter of the major port so it was not too bad, but the open ocean had high, white-capped waves so the captain determined it was best to stay in port another day.
One of our cruise mates has been quite interested in my sketching, I think she wants to give it a try one day. So, while we were sheltering from the rain I did a demo sketch explaining what I was doing. It was good to get back into workshop mode.
The food on our ship is quite good. We eat lunch onboard while sailing to the next destination.
When we arrive in port we wander about seeing the town and looking for a good place to eat, since for evening meals we are on our own. We like that we can explore a place and find a restaurant that we like.
In Dubrovnik we found a place near the ship for a light meal. We had shrimp with an order of frites. The shrimp were lightly breaded tempura with wasabi sauce.
We left Dubrovnik at about 06.30 this morning heading for Korčula. It was a pretty wild ride, which of course I don’t mind at all, actually I like it, however a few of the other guests were not so sure – I think some were a little queasy. We made it here safe and sound.
Korčula is a bit like a small Dubrovnik so it was a quick walk around it. We found a wine and tapas bar, Croatian style, LoLe – Wine and Tapas Bar. It was so different and so enjoyable. We had one plate of grilled veggies, and another of anchovies with onion, tomatoes, and capers.
In Dubrovnik I discovered a shop that sold boya crayons, I was intrigued but didn’t get any. There is also a shop here in Korčula, I gave them a try and ended up buying a few. Not sure what I will do with them, but my ongoing compulsion to try new things is always fun.
They are made and invented by a lady here in Croatia. They do not smudge and do not leave residue on your hands.
Here are the first marks I made, hopefully I can find some interesting things to do with them in the future – we will see.
Tomorrow we sail to Hvar, one of the places that we are most excited to visit.

You already know how much I admire anyone who can draw and paint, but these posts are allowing me to travel to some familiar place names and it almost feels that I am part of the trip! This évasion from every day live is seomthing precious, and I don’t know if you realise how precious.

Sketching from the bow of the ship while docked in Dubrovnik. That is so cool. Certainly words you never thought you’d be writing. So perfect! I’m so glad you had the opportunity to get into your workshop mode with an interested future sketcher. You are VERY good at inspiring and bringing out the artist in others. And those Boya markers; strange & interesting….!

Your endless curiosity (Boya Crayons!) is so admirable. Tim is very curious, too. I hope it rubs off on me one day. All of the food you shared looks equally beautiful and delicious. It looks like you had a wonderful time in Croatia, and I’m so grateful you shared it!

Curiosity comes in different forms, I never want three hours in a museum, I don’t usually want to go that deep.
