A cooler week in Avignon

Not sure if temperatures below 92F qualify as cool, but compared with the 99-100F we have had it seemed better, or maybe we are just acclimating a bit. I got out on a few afternoons just for sketching, quite nice.

Since I am contemplating switching to oils from acrylics I have been using Procreate to experiment on. It is amazing that you can even get canvas texture.

Sunday was my birthday so bien sûr we went out to lunch. Thanks to Google Maps, which is the best place to search for restaurants and hotels, I found Au Jardin Des Carmes. It was the garden setting that was so attractive, the Michelin plaque on the window confirmed that we were in for a good time.

On the way home we stopped at the Opéra Cafe with is near the carousel in Place de l’Horloge. We sat in the shade and watched the parade of people – perfect for a graphite sketch.

On Monday and Tuesday I went back to La Cave Des Pas Sage.

A sketch from Tuesday Tips.

There was a different server, Edith. I did a sketch of her and gave it to her.

Tricia joined me and while we were chatting Edith brought us prints of two of her paintings, I am so impressed.

Yesterday I went out to the place in front of Chapelle Saint Michel. After I sketched, Tricia joined me and we enjoyed the energy of the people.

This afternoon Tricia’s cousin David will be visiting. He has lived in France for 20 years, he is an actor and he will be filming in Avignon, so it should be an entertaining time.

It is hard to believe that we are just a week away from Labor Day (in the US), the traditional end of summer. I hope you are ready for September and the changes in rhythm and weather. Keep eating and sketching.

Thanks to all who comment, it means a lot and I love to hear your thoughts.

You managed to find a cute place for your bday – btw, Happy belated Birthday!

I am not ready to change the rhythm yet, although the fall is my favourite season. The colours have started to change already here, I think a bit too early.. but nothing we can change😍

    1. I have always been ready for fall, it is my favorite season, but you are right, the seasons come and there is nothing we can do but enjoy each.

  3. Happy belated birthday! 🎂

I think that any reduction in high, uncomfortable temperatures is going to be noticeable. We dipped into the mid to high 20s C for a bit while it rained, but now we’re heading back to the 30s. It’s still very summery. Lovely sketches.

We loved the story of your server, Edith–a very talented young lady–gifting you with several of her sketches after you surprised her with one of your on-the-spot sketches. You probably thrilled her, and the feeling was mutual. What a great story!!! Other than that, my favorite sketch in this post is the one in front of Chapelle Saint Michel. What a lovely place! It seems that you enjoyed a great birthday in Avignon!

    1. Thank you Shirley, it was a great birthday. Another interesting anecdote is that I received an email last week from a man who was at one of my workshops. He included a sketch he did when he visited Avignon of the same church, how funny.

A couple of years ago, you told me the best way to find restaurants and hotels was through Google Maps. Ever since then, that’s how I’ve been searching, and you are so right. Your travel tips are as wonderful as your sketches!
